NC Songwriters Co-Op Showcase Sat., May 14, 3 p.m.
"For over 100 years, North Carolina has been a wellspring of songwriting, from mountain bluegrass to Piedmont blues," says Kirk Ridge, a member of the state's Songwriters Co-Op. "That tradition continues to this day, as songwriting is alive and well across the state." He and the Co-Op are out to prove it, too, through festival performance opportunities, open mics, a yearly songwriting contest and a radio show "dedicated to the local songwriter." Rendered through a partnership with PineCone (the Piedmont Council of Traditional Music), this showcase will highlight the importance of songwriting in traditional music with the help of three lauded groups: jazz-folk duo Ace & T-Bone, bluegrass pickers Nixon, Blevons & Gage and Ridge's own Tubby Ridge. The 3 p.m. event is free. —Ashley Melzer
